Irish singer/songwriter/unbeatable guitarist Gerry O'Beirne has been a member of Patrick Street and The Sharon Shannon Band, and has produced and/or been a guest musician for many, many, other artists. We were first interigued by his quirky, poetic songwriting for Patrick Streer (two memorable tracks on Irish Times), then we were blown away by his guitars, and by ... get ready ... his ukelele (you have to see it - or hear it - to beleive it).
Gerry's songs seem at first kind of tenuous, and impromptu, like he's inventing as he's playing and like they'll disappear as soon as he stops, but the melodies ane the images presented will haunt you. The hesitancy of his vocals is nicely contrasted by the authority and beauty of his guitar work. Andy M Stewart (who O'Beirne accompanies in concert) tells a great story about hearing Gerry playing Back, beautifully and then finding that he was playing on a cheap, beat-up child's guitar.
Gerry produced Clandestine's To Andybody at All, and Jen Hamels' solo CD as well.
